Prior to the adoption of 2003-25 on 11/20/2003, Section 2.24.020 read as follows.

    It is the duty of the city attorney:
    A.    To prosecute and defend in all courts all actions on behalf of the city, and defend all actions against any officer or agent of the city on account of official acts;
    B.    To prosecute or defend the city or any officer in civil actions with the consent and approval of the mayor, and make the necessary affidavits and verification in such matters;
    C.    To advise the city council or its committees or any city officer on such legal questions as may arise in relation to the business of the city;
    D.    Attend the meetings of the city council when requested to do so; and
    E.    Having personal knowledge of any violation of a city ordinance or upon receiving reliable information of any such violation, the city attorney shall immediately institute the necessary steps to bring the offender to justice.  (Ord. 91-05, 1991; Prior code §2-24)
